It's the ideal means of transport to explore the desert. In fact, it's what nomadic tribes use. Camels and dromedaries are the animals of choice for anyone wishing to discover the vastness of the Sahara in Maroc, under optimal conditions, without noise, at a gentle pace.
A few precautions are necessary. When a camel or dromedary rises, it leans forward and backward. The passenger, comfortably seated on a leather saddle, must hold firmly to the reins. Otherwise, beware of a fall. After that, it's simply a matter of letting yourself be carried by the animal's steady, tranquil swaying motion. To avoid back pain at the end of a day's camel or dromedary trek, you should avoid tensing up. That said, very quickly, once the camel or dromedary settles into its cruising pace, the passenger feels reassured and can enjoy the pleasures of desert trekking.
Several precautions should be taken before embarking on a camel or dromedary trek. First, protect yourself from the sun and wind, which can rise unexpectedly. A hat or turban wrapped around your head, leaving only your eyes visible, is highly recommended. Don't forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and warm clothing, as nights in the desert are very cold, and of course, you must stay regularly hydrated.
It's important to know that there are two types of desert treks with camels and dromedaries: the meharée (dromedaries carry the luggage and others are designated to accommodate passengers) and the camel trek. In the latter case, the animals are only meant to carry luggage and goods, with participants traveling on foot.
The most beautiful camel and dromedary trekking routes depart from Marrakech and the city of Ouarzazate. Some last a few hours, to admire the sunset behind the sand dunes, while others can extend over several days, or even two weeks, alternating between nights in bivouac camps and hotels. The camel herders accompanying the trekkers handle the logistics and select the bivouac sites. These camel and dromedary treks allow you to cross the Draa Valley, the dunes of Cheggaga and Merzouga, discover henna gardens, rock paintings, palm groves, and follow in the footsteps of ancient caravan traders.
