Between a turquoise lagoon and Saharan dunes, Dakhla earns its nickname as the "Moroccan Caribbean." Our guide to help you prepare your stay.

Dakhla is a city in the western Sahara and a former Phoenician trading post. Located on the Tropic of Cancer, Dakhla enjoys a dry tropical climate with temperatures hovering around 25°C throughout the year.

The Spanish once called Dakhla "Villa Cisneros" in homage to Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros. Perched on a peninsula, the city benefits from a rich and exceptional natural setting. Since around the 2000s, Dakhla Bay has gained renown as a magnet for athletes from around the world drawn to its stunning backdrop for every imaginable water sport. Tourism professionals regularly refer to the peninsula where Dakhla sits as the "Moroccan Caribbean"—a designation that underscores the city's appeal and essential status for water sports enthusiasts pursuing surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing.

Beyond its fabulous bay, Dakhla offers remarkable landscape diversity that enriches any visit. It's truly exceptional to transition from desert scenery with its towering Saharan dunes to Mediterranean-style coves that captivate the senses. With such varied terrain, visitors can enjoy both pristine beaches and pristine wilderness for countless excursions. Dakhla excels at offering guided 4×4 desert drives where you can discover the dunes across one or two days—choose the itinerary that suits you best.

The city boasts numerous beaches, among which Forum el Bouir stands out as the closest to town and an ideal spot for leisurely strolls and water sports of all kinds. Plage Rk. 25, despite lying 25 kilometers from Dakhla, is a location not to be missed. Situated on a lagoon, it radiates its own special charm. Dakhla also showcases artisanal commerce—hand-painted leather goods and silver jewelry are among the treasures to discover and purchase.

That said, Dakhla's artisanal shops are only just beginning to flourish, with most merchants stocking items sourced primarily from Marrakech. The city is equally renowned for its year-round events. The Festival Mer et Désert, held in February, delivers roughly four days of concerts spanning every musical genre. The Rallye des Îles du Soleil and Dakhla's semi-marathon in June exemplify how Dakhla remains a city brimming with character, tradition, and charm—equally inviting for those eager to traverse Saharan dunes or ride the waves on a windsurfing board.
