Earthen ksar built in 2000 by Guy Dubau, 20 km from Tan-Tan then 6 km of track. 22 rooms, 4x4 workshop on site, Sahrawi stopover for adventurers.

In southwestern Maroc, in the Guelmim region at the gates of the western Sahara, Ksar Tafnidilt stands about twenty kilometres from Tan-Tan, at the end of a six-kilometre dirt track. Inspired by the traditional ksours of Ouarzazate, this earthen building offers a rare stopover for travellers heading into the desert by road or in a 4x4.

Why stay at Ksar Tafnidilt

Ksar Tafnidilt was conceived in 1999 by Guy Dubau, a former hospitality professional drawn to the charm of Guelmim. Construction began in 2000 on a remote site, without mains water or electricity, swept by sand-laden winds. The idea was to build a place in harmony with the desert rather than a conventional hotel.

Today, the address has become a favourite stopover for 4x4 adventurers heading towards Mauritania or returning from the Sahara. Visitors come for the isolated setting, the rammed-earth ksar-style architecture, and logistics designed for expedition vehicles—a rare detail in the region.

The ksar atmosphere

Ksar Tafnidilt embraces deliberate simplicity. Raw earthen architecture, volumes inspired by the ksours of the Drâa, the isolation six kilometres from the first paved road: everything contributes to an unadorned desert experience. Sand winds are part of the landscape, comfort remains understated, and evenings stretch on at the bar or terrace, beneath a sky free from light pollution.

The mood is that of a travellers' stopover: you'll encounter 4x4 crews, nomadic groups, sometimes long-distance cyclists. Sharing the space with fellow guests is part of the experience.

The rooms

The ksar has 22 rooms, all equipped with a private bathroom. They reflect the local style, using materials and volumes characteristic of earthen architecture. Comfort remains consistent with the desert setting: understated, functional, without excess.

Services and facilities

  • Bar and restaurant for passing guests
  • On-site shop
  • Camping space for independent travellers with vehicles or tents
  • Dedicated rooms for group gatherings
  • 4x4 repair workshop on site
  • Mechanic available from Tan-Tan in case of serious breakdown

This last feature makes Ksar Tafnidilt a logistical support point for independent travellers—rare at this level of isolation.

Getting there

The ksar is located in the Guelmim region, near Tan-Tan, on the border of western Saharan Maroc. To reach the address, follow the Guelmim–Tan-Tan road and leave the main highway about 20 km before Tan-Tan. The track leading to the ksar is then approximately 6 km. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended, especially after rainfall or when sand drifts across the track.

Nearby attractions

The Tan-Tan area offers several points of interest accessible from the ksar:

  • Tan-Tan Beach: Atlantic oceanfront, about thirty kilometres away, a stop to breathe in sea air before heading south again.
  • Tan-Tan Museum of Art and History: collections of artefacts, regional archaeological pieces and Sahrawi craftsmanship.
  • Oued Jenna Oasis: palm grove and water points in an otherwise very mineral landscape.
  • Oued Massa National Park: protected coastal zone known for its birdlife (flamingos, storks, herons) and the presence of endangered species such as the bald ibis.
  • Tan-Tan Wind Farm: one of Maroc's major wind power complexes, visible from afar in the desert landscape.

To extend your itinerary to other desert locations, also consider Camp Bedouin, or Dar Maktoub near Agadir. For a beach-focused experience heading north, Mazagan Beach Resort offers a very different stopover.
