The City of Taza
The City of Taza
Where the Rif and Middle Atlas mountains meet, Taza watches over one of Maroc's most stunning passes. Almohad medina, Tazekka National Park, Friouato gorge: the guide.
At the point where the mountains of the Rif and those of the Middle Atlas converge, in the North-East of Maroc, lies Taza. The name of this city actually references its location in this mountain pass. Indeed, it derives from the Tamazight word "Tizi" which means "The Pass". In Taza's medina, classified as an architectural and urban heritage site, stands the Great Mosque, one of the most magnificent religious monuments of the Arab-Muslim world. The surroundings of the city, in turn, hold natural wonders such as Lake Bab Louta, an excellent bird-watching spot, and the Friouato gorge, the largest chasm in the country.
History
Taza was built around a fortified monastery constructed by Berbers in the 10th century, which the Almohads and Merinids subsequently reinforced. The city held great strategic importance due to its location between the Rif and the Atlas. However, it became isolated and gradually lost its significance in the 19th century, following a siege by the Ghiatas-Riatas tribes.
Taza experienced French occupation in 1914. It had a population of 152,678 in 2020. The city is today the capital of the province of the same name and is home to a university and military center.
Discovering Taza and Its Surroundings
The Great Mosque
The Great Mosque is the number one attraction in the city of Taza. Consecrated in 1135, it is renowned for its T-shaped plan, which distinguishes it from other structures of its kind, and for its magnificent Arab-Moorish architecture. Its interior is beautifully decorated and features a large bronze chandelier as well as an intricately carved wooden minbar.
Near the Great Mosque, there are also other interesting monuments, most of which date from the 12th century. These include, among others, the Medresa of Abou El Hassan, dating to 1332, and the Andalus Mosque, whose minaret widens as it rises.
The Friouato Gorge
Some 30 km south of Taza, within Tazekka National Park, lies the Friouato gorge, discovered in 1934. Its exact size remains unknown. However, it is estimated to be around 6 km. So far, the explored area extends only 272 meters. The cavity features a shaft 40 meters in diameter and is equipped for visitors. You will descend as far as 125 meters below the surface. A breathtaking view of the gorge walls and sky awaits you once inside.
Mount Tazekka
Some 21 km from Taza, also within Tazekka Park, rises Mount Tazekka, which peaks at 1,980 meters above sea level. To reach its summit, you must pass the Bab Taka pass and turn right after the Bab Azha sign. The road remains challenging in all seasons. For this reason, using a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended. A cedar forest will come into view as you approach the mountain's peak, which is sometimes covered in snow in April and October. You will enjoy a spectacular panorama of the surrounding landscape once you reach the highest point, which is marked by an antenna.
Lake Bab Louta
Lake Bab Louta, located not far from the city, reaches a depth of 45 meters. It is a gathering place for bird enthusiasts. It is home to a variety of migratory species such as northern shoveler, wigeon, crested coot, and teal. The best period for observing these birds is, however, autumn and the post-breeding season. The lake also abounds in fish, such as carp and largemouth bass. This makes it a paradise for sport fishing enthusiasts.
The Ras El-Oued Waterfalls
The Ras El-Oued waterfalls are formed by two major cascades, descending in stages from the river. They are nestled within a picturesque environment, consisting of a slope of green mountains, adorned with oak and olive trees. The location also offers a magnificent view of Taza and the Rif mountain range.
