The spirit of travel
Many alternatives are opening up to tourists wanting to visit Maroc in a different way and away from very busy itineraries. This circuit thus takes us to discover the southern Maroc, between coastal Sahara, wild beaches, oases and Anti-Atlas reliefs.
Throughout the journey, we discover in particular Tiznit, Mirleft, Legzira, White Beach and the Tighmert palm grove, before reaching the mountain Berber villages. The stages alternate between bivouacs in the open air, traditional guesthouses, meetings with local people and discovery of sometimes little-known heritage.
Hiking, swimming, visiting old fortified collective granaries, craft workshops and discovery of dragon trees punctuate the journey. The trip ends in the western High Atlas, at the Atlas Terraces, with a day dedicated to immersion in Berber country.
A varied itinerary that allows you to discover a more confidential Maroc, between ocean, desert, oases and mountains.
Practical information
A direct flight, Laâyoune-Agadir, either outbound or return, would allow us to save more time during our circuit, discovering the specificities of the country's coastal Sahara.

From Agadir airport, via the fortified medina of Tiznit, two hours of driving to already disconnect in a peaceful oasis at Ouijjane.
Night at the bivouac Sous les Palmiers Bleus at the foot of the ramparts of an ancient kasbah, in a Berber tent with private facilities (swimming pool).

2H45 drive via Mirleft (beach, old foreign legion fort, charming small souk), then Legzira (long beach hike to natural arches) and Sidi Ifni (former Spanish enclave).
At Foum El Oued, a river mouth with end-of-the-world vibes but with the lovely Rayon Vert inn offering a unique view over the ocean and good plates of freshly caught fish

Plage Blanche & Aoreora
Only 1 hour drive to reach the beginning of the White Beach.
There at low tide 30 minutes of 4x4 driving on the wet sand of the immense wild beach until the Aoreora estuary.
A bivouac is set up for the occasion at the foot of the sandy cliffs. Possibility to have tea with fishermen, climb the dunes, hike extensively on the beach, swim with caution, stroll through the superb gorge, take a look at the old ruined Foreign Legion fort

Rayon Vert → Fort Noun → Tighmert Palmery
In the morning, return to Rayon Vert in 1H30 then 1H15 of driving via yet another Foreign Legion fort (Fort Noun) then Guelmim to reach the Tighmert palm grove, including two former earth caravanserais converted into museums.
Night at the traditional ecological guesthouse La Maison Saharouie (dry toilets).

Amtoudi & Boutrouch
In 1H30 we reach Amtoudi, at the foot of the southern slope of the Anti-Atlas where the objective is to visit one or two remarkable high perched agadirs (fortified collective granaries) and possibly hike in the gorge to a resurgence where swimming is often possible.
Another 1H15 of travel takes you to Boutrouch, on the Berber plateau of the western Anti-Atlas.
Visit of the Tigida agadir and the cliffs with a local guide.
Overnight at the Association Anti-Atlas occidental Tourisme Montagnard, a dry stone building of the region (shared facilities)

Artisan workshop, Timjicht & dragon trees
In the morning, dyeing workshop or weaving at the women's cooperative.
After 2 hours 45 minutes of driving, you reach Timjicht, whose old perched village, now abandoned, overlooks a gorge in an impressive way. Here and there stand the last dragon trees, magnificent trees on the verge of disappearing.
Not far away, 1 hour's drive, the Dar Ajgal guesthouse welcomes you for the night. You are far from mass tourism!

The Atlas Terraces (Western High Atlas)
Timjichte → Les Terrasses De L'Atlas
Small winding mountain roads allow you to arrive (in 3 hours) at Taroudant, where you can tour the ramparts by horse-drawn carriage.
There remains 1 hour of scenic driving to reach the Berber village of Afensou, dominated by three peaks over 3,500 meters in altitude.
We are welcomed at the guesthouse Les Terrasses de l'Atlas, in a room equipped with a terrace, a private bathroom and also air conditioning.
We can listen to local music at aperitif time or taste some typical dishes, tagines, before moving to the evening atmosphere around the fireplace or under the palm tree.

Immersion in Berber Country
At last a day without driving with activities to choose from! We are recommended a hike to the picturesque little gorges of Tamdousnous. Then we follow the irrigation channels to return in balance and through idyllic fields.
Women can practice henna, a powder of plant origin, on their hair or their limbs… Beyond the aesthetic side, it is said that this natural product has some virtues.
We can also learn about Berber cuisine or the preparation of bread pancakes or continue with a more challenging hiking expedition towards the ridges.
For dinner, we taste homemade couscous. We will sleep in the same guesthouse.

What I love about travel is that moment when you leave the obvious path. That's when the landscape shifts, but more importantly, so does your perspective.
