This emblematic corner of south-eastern Maroc, with its desert of ever-changing ochre hues, reveals a unique spectacle where the dunes, sculpted by wind, seem constantly in motion. The further east you venture, the wilder and more captivating the landscapes become. Whether you travel as a family, a couple, or solo, this destination promises total escape and priceless memories.

Merzouga's History: From Prehistoric Origins to Colonial Impact

Approximately 10,000 to 9,000 years ago, Merzouga was a verdant zone, a tropical jungle blanketed with vegetation and lakes, before the Sahara transformed into a desert. Over time, Merzouga, initially an uninhabited oasis, became an important trading hub for merchants en route to Timbuktu. The village gradually transformed into a pilgrimage site for nomads from the Aït Atta tribes and progressively emerged as a tourist destination. During the colonial period, French Foreign Legion troops built fortifications following the Tafilalet battles (1916–1932). Local legend recounts that wealthy families in the village, known for their immorality, were punished by divine retribution in the form of sandstorms, which allegedly formed the famous Erg Chebbi dunes.

Merzouga Today: Between Natural Disasters and Resilience

Merzouga, a small town in south-eastern Maroc, has recently been marked by exceptional floods, notably in May 2006 and more recently in October 2024. Rare rainfall created new bodies of water around the town. These events remind us that the region, once verdant, can occasionally briefly relive aquatic phenomena. Yet Merzouga remains above all a cherished destination for its spectacular landscapes. The impressive Erg Chebbi dunes attract numerous visitors. Moreover, travelers can enjoy camel safaris and discover the local Berber culture.
