Rich
Rich, in the Ziz Valley, is a pre-Saharan stopover between Midelt and Errachidia. Limestone gorges, palm groves and rammed-earth ksour make up a landscape typical of deepest Morocco.
Rich is a small town in Errachidia province, nestled in the Ziz Valley at the heart of pre-Saharan Morocco. A stopover on the kasbah and oasis route, it marks the transition between the High Atlas and the vast expanses of the erg. The landscape of gorges, palm groves and rammed-earth ksour makes it a prized waypoint for travelers heading down to Merzouga or up toward Midelt.

What to see
The town itself is modest, but its surroundings contain the real interest. The Ziz palm grove runs alongside the road for several kilometers, punctuated by ochre-colored rammed-earth ksour. The Ziz Gorges, accessible from Rich, offer striking views of limestone cliffs and the green ribbon of valley below.
History and context
Rich developed as a caravan relay station on the trans-Saharan axis linking Tafilalet to northern markets. The surrounding ksour bear witness to Berber defensive architecture adapted to an arid climate: thick rammed-earth walls, corner towers, covered alleys. The region was long a crossroads between sedentary and nomadic Berber tribes.
Highlights of your visit
The Ziz Gorges
North of Rich, the national road cuts through the Ziz Gorges, carved into limestone. The contrast between the arid rock and the palm grove in the valley below is particularly striking. Stops at the arranged viewpoints allow you to appreciate the canyon's depth.
The palm grove and ksour
The Ziz Valley is home to one of Morocco's longest palm groves. The rammed-earth villages that dot it—some partially abandoned—illustrate the region's vernacular architecture. A walk or bike ride among the date palms and seguias (irrigation channels) remains the most authentic experience.
The weekly souk
Rich holds a regular souk that draws inhabitants from the surrounding douars. Spices, dates, local crafts and livestock mingle in a rural, largely untouristed atmosphere.
Photo tips
Morning and late afternoon light brings out the ochre tones of the ksour and the lush green of the palm grove. The Ziz Gorges viewpoints offer the widest framing. Always ask local inhabitants for permission before photographing them.
