Tafraout
Nestled within a cirque of pink granite 200 km from Agadir, Tafraout is the Berber gem of the Anti-Atlas: blue rocks, the Ammeln Valley, and flowering almond trees.
Tafraout is a small town surrounded by rocks of striking forms that rise above a palm grove sheltering numerous argan trees, olive groves, and almond orchards. Its population is Berber, and the town sits in the Anti-Atlas region of Maroc, approximately two hundred kilometers from Agadir. It lies at the heart of the Ammeln Valley, cradled within a natural amphitheater of rock faces and cliffs whose colors are truly remarkable. They are composed of granite. The climate is dry and arid; temperatures can soar, leaving little encouragement for lush vegetation.
Upon arrival in Tafraout, the first sight that greets you are its rocky massifs surrounding the town, stones in striking hues and unusual forms—a village where houses range from ochre to pink, with flat roofs. They resemble cubes, sometimes clustered together, with some clinging to mountainsides, dotted with small window openings. Vegetation consists of low scrub clusters that endure the aridity, occasionally punctuated by modest trees.
The village of Tafraout exudes genuine warmth and serves as the convergence point for numerous roads and paths from Tiznit, Agadir, and Tata. It is where merchants from the surrounding area converge. The market is remarkably authentic. Tarps held up by wooden pieces form makeshift canopies. Merchants display their wares—wooden crates and wooden cages overflowing with fresh produce—directly on the earth. Locals arrive with wheelbarrows, wooden or iron carts on two wheels, and sacks. This open-air market creates an unforgettable impression.
The primary activities of Tafraout's inhabitants center on cultivating cereals and numerous fruit trees such as almond and date palms. A significant portion of the population has left the valley for elsewhere, largely due to the region's chronic aridity. In spring, the landscape transforms entirely, and the valley becomes a small wonder when the almond trees burst into bloom. A splendid spectacle that breathes new life into this austere valley. Nevertheless, Tafraout attracts both foreign and Moroccan visitors in considerable numbers, drawn by its exceptional setting and the distinctive pink tone that emanates from every direction. The palm grove offers a welcome touch of freshness and pleasant greenery, with its olive groves and argan trees, renowned worldwide for their prized oil. A small pocket of green that contrasts beautifully with the pink surroundings.
As you explore the valley, you encounter rocks of varied forms that spark the imagination, as well as the famous blue rocks painted by artist Jean Vérame. Tafraout serves as the departure point for numerous excursions: the Ammeln valley, which alone encompasses the villages of Oumesnate, Tazoulte, Asguine, Anil and many others. The village of Aguerd Oudad with its tilted boulder, the Tahala road that winds through an expansive yet narrow oasis, and other destinations like Tiwadou and Tizerkine. Organized circuits are available to guide you through this entire region. Hotels, restaurants, and guesthouses welcome visitors around the village of Tafraout, strategically positioned to allow you to appreciate the magnificent landscape of this small valley. Moments of tranquility, relaxation, exploration, and discovery await you for your utmost enjoyment.
