Plage Blanche

🧭 Off the beaten pathNature & Landscapes

Plage Blanche stretches for miles south of Guelmim, between dunes and the Atlantic. Wild and untouched, it draws surfers, kitesurfers, and travelers seeking an unspoiled Saharan shoreline.

Plage Blanche extends for several dozen kilometers south of Guelmim, in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and backed by pale sand dunes, it remains one of southern Maroc's most wild beaches. The near-total absence of tourist infrastructure makes it a preserved space, frequented mainly by 4x4 travelers and surf and kitesurfing enthusiasts.

Quick reference

  • Access: track from Sidi Ifni or Guelmim, 4x4 vehicle recommended depending on conditions
  • Admission: free
  • Dress code: swimwear acceptable on the beach; cover up in villages you pass through
  • Recommended duration: half-day to full day, or even camping
  • Accessibility for those with mobility challenges: very limited due to the track and soft sand

What you'll see

A ribbon of white, fine sand stretching as far as the eye can see, with no buildings or paved roads in sight. Dunes descend directly to the shore. The Atlantic here is powerful: regular waves, strong currents. Rocks emerge in places, creating fishing zones prized by locals. Marine life—dolphins, turtles—is sometimes visible from the shore.

History and context

The Guelmim region historically marks the gateway to the Maroc Sahara and the beginning of ancient caravan routes toward sub-Saharan Africa. Plage Blanche, long accessible only by track, has remained apart from the beach development that touched other Maroc coasts. Its name simply describes the color of the sand, characteristic of beaches along this stretch of Saharan Atlantic coastline.

Highlights of a visit

Surfing and kitesurfing

Regular winds and quality waves attract surfers and kitesurfers, especially in autumn and spring. No schools or rentals on-site: come fully equipped.

Camping between dunes and ocean

Spending the night on the beach, between dunes and ocean, remains the most sought-after experience. The night sky, far from any light pollution, is exceptional.

Traditional fishing

Local fishermen work this coastline. Observing their fishing techniques with line or net from the shore is part of the sense of escape.

Photography tips

Golden light in late afternoon accentuates the contrast between white sand, ochre dunes, and the deep blue of the Atlantic. In the morning, light mist creates softer moods. Frame wide to convey the vastness of the place. Protect your gear from sand and wind, both very present.

Location and access

Plage Blanche sits on the Atlantic coast, southwest of Guelmim, accessible from Guelmim or from Sidi Ifni by a track running along the coast. A 4x4 vehicle is strongly advised, especially after rains. No public transport serves the beach directly. Plan to bring sufficient water and fuel.

Nearby attractions

  • Sidi Ifni — former Spanish enclave with Art Deco facades, heading north along the coast.
  • Guelmim — gateway city to the Sahara, known for its Saturday camel market.
  • Tan-Tan — city to the south, departure point for even more isolated Saharan coastline beaches.
