Safi blends Portuguese heritage, Morocco's ceramic capital status, and world-class surf breaks. An authentic stop on the Atlantic coast, far from the crowds.

The city of Safi lies in southwestern Maroc. It is a major city with nearly 500,000 inhabitants spread across barely 10,000 hectares. It is considered Morocco's oldest city—once a Phoenician and later a Roman trading post according to geographer Ptolemy, though its antiquity remains debated—and today ranks among the kingdom's most important commercial ports, with dynamic and diversified industries alongside considerable tourism.

Safi grew increasingly important from the 14th century onward, and from the late 15th century, the Portuguese occupied it until 1541. Visitors can still admire the fortified square, seemingly extended by the Dar el Bahr (Castle of the Sea) with its tower offering sweeping views where the eye dissolves into an ocean that stretches the city into a glimmering, almost Mediterranean expanse. In 1541, the city was reclaimed, though it would later be eclipsed by Essaouira during the 1600s. Throughout the 20th century, sardine fishing flourished, and the chemical industry expanded significantly from the 1970s onward. Safi stands as a giant in phosphate processing and cement manufacturing. Its port ranks among the nation's most vital for commerce, particularly for sardine exports.

Tourism holds its own in this city renowned worldwide by surfers as a paradise for wave riding, thanks to its numerous breaks. Beyond this, Safi embodies the traditional charm of all Atlantic coastal settlements, blending diverse cultural legacies with remarkably distinctive architecture. The Castle of the Sea, a Portuguese legacy, leaves a lasting impression. The celebrated pottery souk showcases the influence of its school, founded in the 1920s. The main church surprises with its Christian architecture infused with Moroccan inspiration!

Safi's semi-arid climate is largely offset by oceanic influence, with temperatures rarely exceeding 40°C. Visitors seeking substantial yet reasonable warmth can enjoy multiple advantages, marrying cultural and beach tourism—Safi's idyllic beaches prove a genuine blessing. Safi: yet another of the countless wonders of the Maroc kingdom! A city brimming with diversity and history, capable only of charming through its beauty and captivating story, poised at the frontier between reality and legend.
