Erfoud
Erfoud
Known as the gateway to the Sahara, Erfoud stands sentinel before Erg Chebbi: ancient fossils, black marble, the Ziz valley's palm groves and nights under desert stars.
Discover the Moroccan desert by visiting Erfoud, a town nestled in the Drâa-Tafilalet region in the country's south. Appreciated for its modern atmosphere, it preserves touches of tradition with several clay-built houses. Nicknamed the "gateway to the Sahara" due to its proximity to the Erg Chebbi dunes, Erfoud invites you to pause and contemplate the spectacular landscapes that surround it.
This is the preferred destination for paleontology enthusiasts, thanks to its wealth of rare fossils.
A Brief History
Erfoud owes its name to its role as a vital commercial hub for caravans traveling from Africa and northern Morocco. The French were the first to settle the town, tasked with overseeing the rebellious tribes of Tafilalet. Over time, it flourished through the thriving marble and date trade. By 1917, it had become a modern city under French protectorate rule.
Following independence, the town experienced significant demographic changes. The arrival of colonial and Jewish immigrants, combined with rural migration, led to the replacement of the original population with new inhabitants, primarily from the Ksour. These shifts profoundly transformed the city.
